And a bagel, with exxxxtra cream cheese.

A glass of water and a cuppa.

Is there really (REALLY) anything better than that? At least, as far as the first meal of the day goes.

What I really think about vegans: Days 4 through 9.

That’s right all, I’m am currently writing this at four minutes into my tenth day of the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart. That is halfway, and let me tell you: it still isn’t that hard.

In fact, the only difficult thing is breaking habit. It’s amazing how much shit I just put in my mouth, without even thinking about it! Small mints and candies and snacks are the most difficult, I just pop them in my mouth without even the slightest hesitation. Without fail, about 15 to 45 seconds later I realize that I have no idea what I am chew/sucking on, and I spit whatever I’ve just put in my pie-hole out, and read the ingredients list. And there’s always something: butter, gelatin, honey, whatever.

While things like cheese and sushi and sour cream are still on my mind, I find that I can easily and happily fill myself up on other delicious (plant-based) foods, and not really even miss them. Most of the time, the products that I’ve cut out of my diet are things that are unnecessary additions to already delicious dishes, or easily replaced.

For instance, we make bean/mixed veggies and greens/tofu burritos in whole wheat wraps with lots of garlic and salsa, and the additions of meat, cheese, and sour cream are just a fleeting thought in my head that skips out just before I sink my teeth into the burrito. Or just now: Taylor made whole wheat pasta with white sauce. I know it seems impossible, but she used Sour Supreme (a sour cream replacement) thinned out with water or soy milk, and cooked it up with garlic, salt, and pepper, and mixed vegetables, put it on top of her noodles and voila! it’s almost exactly like alfredo sauce! Stroke of genius, Tay!

Anyway, the munchies are starting to kick in, I’m on the hunt for some soy mocha almond fugde.

What I really think about vegans: Days 1 and 2, and some of 3.

Today marks day number three of the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart (thank you pcrm.org and gigsanchez.wordpress.com), and Taylor and I are getting along with the vegan lifestyle famously. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against eating animals or their by-products, necessarily, though it has always been somewhat of a gray area for me, even though I am hopelessly devoted to a number of dairy products.

Supposedly the idea of this vegan thing is to kickstart our health. A plant-based diet is supposed to lower our blood pressure and cholesterol, help us to lose weight, plus, for me it is a much more guilt-free lifestyle. I don’t feel that ridiculous guilt I felt while watching the movie “Fast Food Nation” (what a downer) and I can pig out and not feel too bad about it. Plus there is so much less fat involved, and empty calorie-consumption (of which I do plenty.)

Of course, the first thing I consumed on day one (aside from a couple pinches of granola) was a caramel macchiato (you know the routine–iced triple grande one-pump vanilla SOY caramel macchiato–no I don’t do the corporate coffee thing, but my girlfriend works there, which means it’s free, so why not?) I almost forgot to throw the soy in there, and realized how much more I love having milk in my coffee, just cuts it better, but the soy was also fairly enjoyable, though it made the drink a little sweet for my taste.

In other news, I have made a yummy veggie stir-fry thing (a couple of times), some homemade bread with homemade vegan jelly (thank you, Taylor), oatmeal, bean/veggie/tofu/potato burritos, salted popcorn, etc., and haven’t really felt that I was lacking any of my usual suspects (ie: eggs, sour cream, and any form of cheeeeeese, my one true love!) I also have not much missed meat, I usually don’t eat much of it anyway, as it isn’t super appealing and is quite expensive.

My verdict so far: this vegan thing ain’t so bad. That said, tonight I am going to a work party with Taylor, where I will be no doubt tempted by many delicious Asian dishes. Damn.

What I really think about chocolate peanut butter ice cream.

Dear Tillamook,

While I love your cheese (and squeaky cheese!) and other assorted dairy products, your chocolate peanut butter ice cream is hands-down the best I have ever eaten (which is really something, considering I am an avid choco-peanut butter fan).

The chocolate ice cream is so rich and creamy… The ribbons of peanut butter swirling throughout are so thick and salty, and so abundant, and without chunks of peanut–so smooth… The two compliment one another so perfectly, and it all dissolves in my mouth to make the best flavor combination known to man!

Keep up the good work, guys.

What I really think about doppelgangers.

After avoiding the Facebook breast cancer post-your-bra-color extravaganza, I gave in to the evils of fads and doppelgangers week. Equipped with the ever-so-handy celebrity look-alike generator on MyHeritage.com, I picked out a straight-on, full-faced picture of me that seemed to be the best representation, and uploaded it. I excitedly waited for my matches with Taylor, wondering if I would get Reese Witherspoon (who people always say I look like) or one of the Olsen twins (who people used to say I looked like as a child).

Finally, after almost more time than I could stand (I mean come on, high speed internet, really?!) my matches finally popped up! As we scrolled through them, my matches were increasingly disappointing and, for the most part, male or Asian (including Daniel Radcliffe AKA Harry fucking Potter).

Obviously, after this I was seriously disenchanted. I decided I was nowhere near cute (or thin?) enough to post a picture of either of the Olsen twins or Reese Witherspoon, out of fear that people would scoff and think me conceited. So I posted no picture, and just an update to the effect of: Tried to find her doppelganger via MyHeritage.com, and her best matches were either Daniel Radcliffe (??) or Asian and/or male. So, no go, I’m just free to be me.

Needless to say, the post got a couple of responses, one from Taylor’s brother, who informed me that he thinks I look a little bit like America Ferrera, and the other from a friend who agreed. I googled her, of course, and browsed through a few images before deciding that she, too, was a little too pretty for me to presume her to be my doppelganger, and picked a picture of her in her show “Ugly Betty.” Though I am neither Hispanic nor have braces, some of the facial features and the glasses reminded me of myself.

But I wasn’t satisfied.

I googled “Reese Witherspoon” (not quite me), so I googled “fat Reese Witherspoon” (apparently there is no such thing), so (remembering her in Election) I googled “young Reese Witherspoon.” Tah-dah! I found a picture I was content with (similar to the one on the left), and cropped it a little, and called it a day.

But I still feel silly… And… I guess I would rather just be me… Ha.

Needless to say, we fiddled around on MyHeritage.com all day. My friend Casey who got Mother Teresa as her number one match (an aged Mother Teresa at that) when all she really looks like is our friend Jessa (or so we’ve heard), and Jessa’s match included Halle Berry and Madonna, neither of whom she looks like at all (we have since decided that their system is seriously flawed, aside from several matches here and there that were fairly close). Of course, this brought us to search for other celebrity look-alike generators, which led me to stumbling upon the greatest and the creepiest website of all time.

MakeMeBabies.com !! Holy shit.

Naturally, I matched my picture with pictures of all of my friends that were readily available (and some that were not), and picked out a frame and gender (or no gender) and name, and a picture of our child (“Little _____”) was generated and framed. I even matched myself up to see what my love child with Miley Cyrus would look like (trashy, and not cute).

See! Today, I did a damn good job using this period of joblessness.

What I really think about graham crackers and frosting.

In case (in the space of time between now and when you were eight) you have forgotten how delicious a graham cracker-frosting sandwich is, remind yourself.

Nearly every time I visit my  mother (who lives only about 25 miles away from me) she inevitably sends me home with some food and/or random item she thinks I may need. A few weeks ago, this meant graham crackers, frosting, and the offer of a rolling pin (but I told her I could spring for my own).

Why? you ask? Because  a few weeks before that, her sixth grade class had made gingerbread projects as a holiday/geometry project, and she consequently had graham crackers and yellow frosting coming out of her ears. I told her I guessed I could be troubled to take them off of her hands, and then giddily skipped home to snack on one of my childhood favorites.

In case you don’t know how this is done, here is the recipe (heh heh heh):

Ingredients/Supplies

1 package of graham crackers

1 container of cake frosting (I infinitely prefer chocolate)

A knife (optional)

Some weed?

Instructions

1. You’ll probably want to roast a bowl, or two, or three;

2. Maybe put on some South Park? Or any other adult cartoon. Or children’s cartoon, for that matter;

3. Open the box of graham crackers and the container of frosting (beware–these are both two steps in one, as the graham crackers are in a box and have a plastic wrapper, and the frosting has a plastic, reusable lid and a foil covering that you must peel back–complex shit, I know);

4. Choose a graham cracker, and break it in half (I prefer the two square halves, but you could always break it lengthwise for a looooong rectangular sandwich–fun!);

5. Now, using your knife (or finger) spread some frosting on one of the halves (you can choose, a thin layer or a liberal amount) and top the frosting with the other half of the graham cracker (if you’re really baked and lazy, you can quarter your graham cracker and dip it in the frosting, but I think the sandwich allows the full flavor and effect);

6. Tah-dah! Graham cracker-frosting sandwich!!! Enjoy!

Variations on this recipe include: substituting cookies for graham crackers, substituting ice cream for frosting, adding other candies/sweets into the middle of your sandwich.

What I really think about bread (and “Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day”).

Bread? Yes, bread!

With the aid of some gifts from my mother–rubber spatula, turner, tongs, cast iron pan, etc., and most importantly a book called Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day by Jeff Hertzberg, M.D. and Zoe Francois–I have become a bread maker!

Let me tell you right off the bat, I am a carbohydrate junkie. I love ALL food, but I live for pasta, rice, potatoes, and bread (oh, and cheeeeese). My mouth waters at just the mention! I know this is not the most healthy obsession, by any means, and I am truly regretful that I can’t get excited about something better for me (brussel sprouts? broccoli? water? air?).

But at least now I can easily (and economically) feed my habit. And, because I am ridiculously proud of myself, I am going to share my first solo bread accomplishment, and is it ever beautiful!

Look at that! My first loaf, all on my own, and it is gorgeous! Not burnt, or misshapen, or dry, or doughy, but nearly perfect!

And this book has got many recipes, from flatbread and pizza to naan and herb loaves or sticky buns or challah bread or pastries, and so easy, and so accessible! If you are at all interested in making any of these things (or saving money!) get this book!

All right, I’d better cut this off before I look like a total dork and get too excited (and maybe I already have).
